fleur b. the new boutique on the block

fleur b. Duke St. W1

Inspired by her customers and driven by her passion for fashion, Fleur Bird opened her first fleur b. boutique on Chelsea Green in May this year.  But it was actually her most recently opened boutique, on Duke Street W1, which initially caught my eye.  I love the way she has handpicked some of my favourite designers (Mother, American Vintage, Violet Lake) and added her own, classic, UK- manufactured line, fleur b. to the mix.

I had been offered a couple of non-me dresses for the London Film Festival and was planning to dig out an old silk dress from my wardrobe when Fleur offered me her Green Foundation Dress £320 for my date night with Ben Affleck.

Divine to wear, it could be dressed up (as I did with patent heals) or teamed with black knee high boots, to make a perfect day dress.

I caught up with Fleur to ask her how she manages to cope with 3 babies, 2 shops and her own clothing line:

Where do you clothes shop?  I love to shop. One of the greatest things about my job is that I get to travel a great deal. I always make time for shopping on a trip and can usually find boutiques and brands that aren’t stocked in the UK – often you may see them the following season in fleur b.

which is your favourite (non fleur b.) going out dress?  I love to wear clothes made by other designers, as well as my own collections, hence the reason Fleur b boutiques will always stock other brands. I believe mixing designers is important for creating your own individual look. I brought the most amazing Philip Lim 3.1 dress in New York long before he was stocked in the UK. It is practically vintage now but every time I have a ‘do’, it’s my feel-great fall-back dress.

how many shops do you plan to open? We are a very ambitious team but individuality is at the heart of our concept so we will need to find the right balance between demand and maintaining our exclusivity.

where would we find you on a sunny London morning – without the kids? Enjoying coffee and papers in the quiet oasis of Lancashire Court, close to Elemis, my favourite London spa.

best book ever read?  Reading is pure escapism for me and I must admit I have read every book Penny Vincenzi has ever written – and eagerly await her next!

best film ever seen? I loved the last film I saw, Skyfall. Bond never disappoints.

best meal eaten? Petersham Nurseries; it’s only open in the evenings over Christmas. Everything is grown locally and it is the most magical dining experience.

best advice ever given to you? Believe in yourself and don’t linger in the past; tomorrow is another day.

if you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Hong Kong, I used to travel there a lot when I was a buyer. I love its vibrancy and energy.

Halloween 2012: channeling Chanel, sweet Lola and a shipless pirate

Spooks day is upon us.  While I just go with the flow, The Smalls have been up since 6am with excitement.  Bombarded by PR agencies begging me to mention their Halloween-themed this or that, I only conceded to post when Harrods Food Hall promised to send us their exclusive Lola’s Halloween cupcakes for the occasion.

Then Chanel flirted with me offering hauntingly glamorous warpaint which I couldn’t refuse.

Chanel’s new nail colour, Malice.

And –  the toy shop to beat all others, Honey Jam, had a dream pirate fancy dress for Small.

Our annual pre-trick-or-treating party was hosted by the NW8 Halloween Queen, Lady Lala.

Once the sugar high was reached, we set the witches, pumpkins, ghosts and pirates free to beg for more.

Hiding behind the mask….

beauty masks for some faceless friends…

Is it still autumn or are we now edging into winter?  Some days it is so grey and misty, I wonder if the seasons are blurring into one.  Either way, we need to put a brave face on it.  And anyway, it’s a great excuse to brighten up our puzzled faces by improving our home beauty regime.

Taking the challenge as seriously as I could, I appealed to the beauty world at large to send me samples of their highly-rated face masks.  And then as they came piling through the door, I panicked.  One face was looking at more than 10 masks.  A logistical impossibility for any beauty queen…

So…I called on a little (faceless) help from my (now glowing) friends and asked those willing to try a mask and report back.   With squeals of delight, masks were chosen according to skin types and everyone hurried home to layer it on.

A few of us tried Aromatherapy Associates’ Overnight Repair Mask and Soothing Treatment Mask.  And both masks repeatedly got the big thumbs up (despite the eye-watering price) as we noticed a massive difference in our next-morning faces.

Ahava’s Time to Hydrate was also highly rated but my tester said it was a little sticky to get off.

Lancome’s Hydra Intense Mask was – as expected – an effective mask but we thought lacked any imagination in terms of smell and performance.

Melvita Masque Purifiant had a little tingle and no smell but left the skin soft and smooth.

Yes to Cucumbers Calming Facial Mask was a big hit but then I have always been a fan of the Yes to range (and its great value)… unfortunately it’s not so easy to find in the UK.

Super Facialist by Una Brennan’s Intense Moisture Mask felt a little too tingly for my liking…and I have to admit it didn’t feel too luxurious. We weren’t sure how much the A List facialist uses this mask.

Docteur Renaud’s Raspberry Soft Mask was a great eraser of lines and can be found at good old M&S.

GlamGlow Mud Mask is a pure hero.  High in ancient volcanic ash, super antioxidants and minerals, it can’t go wrong.

Sjal Kashmir Saphir Perfecting Mask was as impressive as its sister product the Pearl Enzyme Exfoliating Masque – and just goes to prove that an expensive mask is worth every penny. Check out Beauty Works West for the incredible Sjal range.

Bakel Pure Peel is hard core and for the die-hard beauty regimer. With salicylic and citric acid, you can expect itching as all your dead cells are eliminated by this pioneering, recently launched mask.

Merumaya’s Pure Radiance Mask (which hasn’t even officially launched yet) is pretty much a light bulb moment….

And finally, the best non-face mask award goes to Charles Worthington’s Overnight Ultimate Hair Healer.  It’s quite astonishing and, if you are a pristine bed linen lover, then just pop on for half an hour before you shower.

“You could not pay me enough to be 24 again!’ Lena Dunham’s Girls / Sky Atlantic

Girls: from left, Jemima Kirke, Lena Dunham and Zosia Mamet Photo: Rex Features

I was pretty sure that Sky Atlantic’s new American comedy Girls was not aimed at me.  Chronicling the lives of four feckless twentysomethings in NYC and written by a 26 year old didn’t exactly sell the series to me.  And then there was the issue that we don’t have the Sky Atlantic channel. But, with a friend desperate to see, I asked Sky Press Office to send me a few episodes for review.

Last night I watched the first three episodes.  At first glance, I was right.  The show is all about 20-something bad sex, unsexy poses and some rather spoilt, over-educated middle class kids. The opening scene of the first episode introduces us to Hannah (played by Lena Dunham herself) as her parents inform her of their decision not to support her financially going forward.  Hannah is shocked to the core as she clearly feels entitled to their support  – as she writes her book.  Straight faced she tells them:  ‘I might be the voice of my generation. Or a voice. Of a generation.’

So, the arrogance continues and the feeling of entitlement increases.  It’s pretty irritating but probably the most annoying thing about this show is how real it feels.  The unsexy sex, false friendships, awful romance and youthful arrogance are all a true reflection of their generation.  And that’s why Girls was nominated for four Emmys and US critics have called it ‘an exciting moment in television history’ and why UK ratings for the show will also go through the roof.

But I am 41, still adore Carrie Bradshaw and won’t be watching Girls.  You honestly couldn’t pay me enough to be 24 and watch this.

Girls is on Sky Atlantic on Mondays at 10.00pm
