tea for two

My plus ones tend to find me, rather than me choosing them.  Over-heard mobile conversations, previously arranged rendezvous and long over-due catch ups make choosing my companion for reviews easy.

The small people in my life, however, feel that they miss out.  Evening reviews mean that I sometimes not around for that last kiss goodnight or simply knowing that I am dashing for the front door as their head hits the pillow can make for disgruntled housemates.

So when the opportunity came up for me to review the recently re-launched afternoon tea at Chinoiserie at Jumeirah Carlton Tower, designed by renowned patissier Eric Lanlard, Mini-Me begged with all her might to be my plus one.

In a distinctive move away from traditional finger sandwiches and cream cakes of the quintessentially English afternoon tea, Eric was adamant that he, in partnership with the 51 year old hotel, should create a tea which invokes a ‘dream of the Orient’.  How curious my 7 year old rightly thought as, once the tea was laid out in front of us, our waitress sprayed us and the lavish spread with a mist of Oriental scent.  The hotel’s marketing manager explained that the French master patissier was keen to reflect the numerous oriental and middle eastern guests choosing to stay in this hotel, located just off Sloane Street.

squidgy cinnamon balls, loving rolled by little fingers

Those of you who know me well are fully aware that I am the less-conventional Jewish wife.  Without delving into any religious identity discussion, I will confess that, for me, the communal enjoyment of certain foods is religion at its best.  My idiot proof contributions to tonight’s festivities include: cinnamon balls, chopped liver, which will never be half as good as my grandma’s and charoset, the delicious apple, nut, cinnamon mixed with ultra sweet wine which represents the mortar that the Israelites used to make bricks while they were slaves in Egypt.  Let’s hope my version is not too symbolic.

happy religious eating!

Brit Lux & Vietnamese Lush

Neighbour and I headed into Soho last night in search of some pure British luxury design.  Creative friend had pulled together an AW12 showcase of her clients and other admired brands in the white linen table-clothed, Quo Vadis, Dean Street.  Healthy-sized Broker’s gin and tonic were thrust into our eager mitts as we flirted and giggled like suspicious schoolgirls, pouring over the new season home-grown fashion.

Rule Britannia moments included:

Robinson Pelham Brown Diamond and Yellow Gold Egg Pendant

Suzannah's Fifties Night Double Silk Dress

Edwina Ibbotson Millinery

Having drained the quintessentially English tipple, we sloped off to Cay Tre , a modern yet cosy Vietnamese, further down Dean   Street.  Highly recommended on the twittersphere by jewellery designer @JuliaBurness (see previous post), we weren’t in the least bit disappointed.  Neighbour devoured a Bun Sa at breakneck speed. To those, like us, who don’t know what this is, expect a big bowl of vermicelli noodles, cucumber, bean sprouts, mixed, peanuts with sautéed lemongrass.  I choose red sea prawns in a light black pepper sauce with a bowl of brown rice.

All in all, a typical Soho night out; British and yet not.

the other white russian

snow room

Just when the beauty market feels utterly saturated, a new range drifts in from Russia, via those chic, pampering-aficionado Parisians.  Russie Blanche (sounds curiously like a racy cocktail) is a new skincare range launching here in the UK this week following its hugely positive reception from our friends across the channel.  Created, and self-financed, by model and former Miss USSR, Julia Lemigova, the collection boasts the purest and most natural of ingredients.  You will only find the best quality essential oils and plant extracts such as Golden Root and Siberian Ginseng in these paraben and silicone-free creams, masques, cleansers, scrubs and oils.

Combining Slavic elegance with French beauty expertise could be the secret to Julia’s success.  Furthermore, she has chosen the K SPA,  as her first UK stockist and spa partner with its unique hot and cold therapies including -15 degrees snow room to remind her clients of her Russian roots.

If I had to highlight one single product from the range, I would have no issue singling out the Siberian Petals Moisturizing Mask (50ml / £65). Layering it over my late-night and early morning skin I felt an immediate sense of cool, both in temperature and in relax status. It is also brilliantly moisturising and left my face in full glow for the rest of the day.

Russie Blanche products are available exclusively at K West Hotel & Spa, Richmond Way, London W14 0AX
