Time to make a FASS

It’s so rare that I make a real fuss… about make-up.  I sometimes wonder if it is just because I was never the little girl watching my mother taking hours to apply her war paint.  My mother has always been keener on Mozart and Molière and less keen to waste her time on frivolous make-up.

But today I squealed.  And then I spent a good 30 minutes playing with the radically designed Ellis Faas products.  Looking more like bullets than eyeliners and lipsticks, these silver pens are the absolute future of face-colouring-in.

Dutch make-up artist, Ellis recognised the need for an overhaul of our mismatched, often misplaced, vanity case.  Her revolutionary concept of a bunch of pens which sit, quite beautifully, in a streamlined, sci-fi-esque holder is just too thrilling for any girlie girl to bear.

The Faas range has been created using the human palette for inspiration, such as a drop of blood, or a purple bruise.  And there is a reason for this; her colours miraculously suit everyone, despite our varying skin tones.  Petrified of red lipstick (on me or on anyone near me), I only applied the Milky LipsL201 to make Mini-Me laugh.  She didn’t though; we both agreed it was completely fabulous and should become my new ‘after-dark’ look.

Made with the highest quality ingredients, the range could not be described as a bargain but is worth dipping your toe in the water to try at least one bullet. SPACE.NK offers a great selection.

my date with a 23 year old artist

Man on Chair ring

Kyle would never have guessed my age, had he not started ‘our date’ with the issues he is having as the youngest designer at this year’s London Fashion Week.  And I, in turn, would never have imagined that the creations coming from his 24/7 workshop were the output of someone so young.  But then, so much of Kyle goes against the grain.

Originally from Seattle, Kyle lives in his own Foucault-analysed world.  He is utterly fascinated by social institutions, the functionality of sexuality and has an intense interest in animals, plants and geometric shapes. He lives and breathes his philosophies and each of his collections to-date reflects his thought process.  So, you see, he is not a jeweller at all but an artist.

Meeting at his favourite coffee ‘hang out’, Department of Coffee and Social Affairs, allowed me to satisfy my curiosity in this incredibly talented young gun.  Kyle is modest and bashful when I tell him how much I adore his work.  I admired his unerring determination to clarify for me the difference between his work and that of a premium brand jeweller.  But I get it.  He can relax.  The world of Bond Street and Kyle Hopkins can not be compared.  Each of his pieces tells a story of humanity, power or identity, or all three.

Society seen through Kyle’s eyes can be worn through his creations.

the girl behind the tea party

A hairdresser does not tend to cut her own hair, a builder will often employ another builder to help him build a house so here I am telling a blogger’s story on my blog.

I met Ella Gregory, founder of the brilliant fashion blog www.cocosteaparty.com at a product launch earlier this year.  Chatting to her about the enormous following she has built up, the brand she has created and her passion for fashion, I felt honoured when she agreed to answer my nosy questions about her blogging career to date.

1) Who is your hero?

There are so many women that I look up to. But I suppose in the fashion industry the most obvious choices have to be Anna Wintour and Natalie Massenet, who are both at the top of their game. I also have  great respect for Suzy Menkes. I see her around LFW all the time and she is constantly filing copy, whether she’s lining up outside show venues or sitting on the front row.

2) What time do you power up your lap top each morning?

Always before 7.30am.

3) What don’t you buy online?

I prefer not to by makeup and beauty products online as I prefer to test them in store and have that one-on-one contact with the girls behind the makeup counter. I still don’t think anyone has managed to create that same experience online.

4) Which brand does it best online?

Net-A-Porter is still the best, in my opinion. But I also really rate ASOS for their mix of great price points, easy returns and fantastic customer service.

5) How many glossies do you read each month to stay ‘in the know’?

Between eight and ten, I would say. Although each month I find I have less time to read everything I want to. The publications I always look forward to are US Vogue and ELLEUK.

6) Which PR agency understands bloggers the best?

I’ve developed strong relationships with many different agencies and in-house PRs over the years, and I think overall the majority really understand bloggers now. Whenever a story or campaign is pitched to you that isn’t quite right I always think it’s best to explain why, rather than just saying no, as it builds yet another level of understanding.

7) How do you unwind?

I have a strange obsession with medical dramas, so love to watch old episodes of ER.

8) What have you got your eye on at the moment?

This season I’m loving the collections from Joseph and Theysekens’ Theory. They’re both so easy to wear and will continue to work well for seasons to come.
