Labels4Kids: do YOU sew on those name tags?

I’ve been conducting a next day pharmacy little survey – probably to ease my conscience.  I wondered how many of my friends actually sew a woven label into each small item of clothing before the school year kicks off.  And how many, like me, use stickers, permanent laundry markers and those iron-ons in every effort to avoid the needle and thread?

I grew up with beautifully embroidered Emma Yablon woven name tags in my school uniform, all sewn in by Lady Y.  So why is it now UNTHINKABLE for me to sit and sew in the evenings?  Are we the first generation to refuse to cross stitch for the sake of lost uniform?

I have also noticed that despite the Smalls’ schools specifying: all school uniform must be labeled; it is evident that many parents just don’t bother naming at all.  Perhaps these anti-labellers are fed up of the iron-on peel-off labels and have a similar amount of interest in sewing as me?  Or perhaps they simply help themselves to a similar item from Lost Property when theirs is lost?

Either way, it’s labeling back-to-school season and while I was researching the numerous label printing companies, I came across Ann-Maree Morrison, founder and managing director of Labels4Kids and her labeling story. Accountant and management consultant by profession, Ann-Maree was quite literally hit by a truck before taking some time out and setting up her label business:

How old are your children now? 16, 14 and 11

Why did you feel that there was a name label gap in the market?  I could not get any name labels for my kids lunch boxes, water bottles, shoes – so decided to fill the gap. There are others copying us now but not as good in my view! We offer only high quality and a wide choice.

What makes Labels4kids different from its competitors?  Service, personal attention, high quality and we care. We do 100% money back guarantee, free delivery, and a new easy to use website (after we fix the bugs) as well as fundraising that also helps the parent not just the school.

On average, how many different types of labels do your customers buy?  Usually a 3 or 4.

What is the most unusual item you have ever labelled in your household?  In my house?  Got to be the computer mice, colour coded to match the machines!

Who or what inspires you in your business? Learning and competition. I am also inspired by ASOS and their performance staying ahead of the ecommerce game.  As far as people go Karren Brady and Richard Branson are my favourite business people.

If not labels, then what? Anything I could find with a gap in the market. Just happened to be my first inspiration, probably not the last!

Do you have any new products/labels in the pipeline? Yes we are always introducing new ideas but they go through a long period of testing before I let them loose on customers. I only want quality. Sometimes customers come up with ideas for us too. Some are really good and others just not viable for the market as a whole.

On average, how much do your customers spend on labels each school year? £30

What would you change about your life?  Work less and have more time. This means growing our team, which of course has budget constraints.

How do you de-stress after work? Tennis or a drink with friends. I love Holby City too…

Where would we find you taking some time-out?  On the tennis court, in La Manga (Spain) or reading business books by a pool somewhere in the shade.

Best book you’ve ever read?  Dale Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people”.  It’s common sense but so overlooked by so many people. Common courtesy goes a long way. My business follows the same philosophy “treat people as you wish to be treated” and if we have abusive customers we listen and then see what we can do to help them.

Do we still live in a world where parents sew on name tapes? Sadly we do but then it is dictated by the schools. There are so many other options but some schools are stuck in a time warp and think nothing else will stay on.

How many of your customers sew-on? Not as high as 50% any more. Probably a third.

COMPETITION:  Labels4kids has kindly given me £25 vouchers for labels for 4 of my readers.  All you have to do to enter this competition is sign up to my blog (top right of homepage),  follow me on Twitter and the winners will be chosen on Monday 9th September 2013.

The Fish Shack, Ibiza

I really do enjoy spending a large amount of my time eating in a variety of (mostly London) restaurants.  I consume the hype, tweet my excitement and digest the cuisine before regurgitating my verdict as a blog post.

And, now I think about it, I suppose a lot of my homework is done in advance.  I check out the restaurant’s website, their menus and specialties, research other reviews and then call ahead to explain that I will be reviewing, while securing a table.

None of this was the case for The Fish Shack.  Tipped off by one of my brother-in-laws, I was on a mission to find a place which, according to him, ‘serves fish more delicious than Scott’s’.  No website, no address, no telephone number (therefore no bookings), no menus and only a couple of nods as I asked locals and hotel staff alike if they had heard of this unusual eaterie.

But this only made me hungrier, all the more keen to visit and adamant to turn a deaf ear to Him, who had decided it was ‘all marketing hype’ and quite potentially a waste of time.

However one particular Ibizan urged me NOT to give up.  Head for Sa Punta in Talamanca, he advised.  Park in Sa Punta’s car park and then climb over the rocks at the back of the restaurant.  You’ll need to get there early to secure a table but you can swim in sea while one of your crowd holds onto the table.

The last day of the holiday (expectantly – another story) arose.  Map in hand, we headed south with some friends curious enough to follow us.

The café has been owned by the same family for 34 years.  There is no need for a menu as it simply consists of what has been pulled out of the sea that morning.  Tuna, sardines, sea bream and sea bass. Along with buttery potatoes and a tomato and onion salad.  That’s it.

We had all swum before we feasted – and I mean feasted – on quite the most deliciously grilled freshest fish I have ever consumed.

The Fish Shack doesn’t need twitter, Facebook, site traffic or to even waste their time answering the phone to take bookings.  The whole shack probably seats a 100 salty bottoms but as it is open between midday and 11pm every day of the week (in season), I reckon it feeds as many Ibizians (and tourists) as the most marketed restaurant in London.

So, don’t let your fellow holidayers talk you out of making the trip to The Fish Shack.  I am pretty sure I won’t ever taste a sardine that good again.

The Fish Shack is open between May – September and has no fixed address or contact details.

Knomo: a new mobile home for my lap top

Pippa Middleton and her Knomo bag

Pippa Middleton and her Knomo bag

Last month I dragged 2 large suitcases (on wheels) and 2 hot, tired Smalls through Pisa airport.  And that would have been painful enough except that I had my lap top (which I don’t ever go anywhere without) in a messenger computer bag strapped across me.  Proverbially that was the moment that broke the camel’s back, as I swore (fairly audibly) that the moment I got home I would find a lap top bag on wheels.  I justified that not only would airports be more pleasant experience, but I would also arrive at interviews and client meetings in more style and with less backache.

But, in my mind, I had thought that this wheely bag would have to be black, masculine and undisputedly executive-swanky looking.  And then I discovered Knomo and their effortless and madly attractive designs.  From lap top sleeves to handbags to man bags to cabin-sized wheeled lap top (almost weekend) bag.

I got in touch with Knomo immediately.  I had never seen such feminine yet practical bags, each designed to house technology (iphone, ipad, laptop etc).  The PR girl explained that Knomo (a clever mix of the words Knowledge and Mobility –  fyi the K is silent) watched the way we (the infamous consumer) leave home with our technology and has specifically created bags to fit this daily need.

Jumping at the chance to attend their press day, I snapped the new season Knomo range, celebrated their logo change and wheeled my new Scala home on the tube.   Large enough to be a weekend bag but sleek enough to nip around town, I was thrilled with my new marine-blue follower.

And, reporting from my travels in Ibiza, I can assure you that my laptop and I are both very happy indeed.  There’s no swearing or sweating as we move from hotel to hotel to villa.  Effortlessly stylish – at least when it comes to my Knomo bag.

38 Degrees North: holiday + trainers

For many, exercise and holiday are mutually exclusive.  The idea (apparently) seems horrific.  But He and I LOVE our daily swim or run or yoga etc while on family trips abroad.  For one it allows us to avoid childcare for an hour or so and, of course, it gives us carte blanche to eat and eat and eat…

38 Degrees North sent delicious juices to my hotel room

It is clear that 38 Degrees North*, dreamt up by an Ibizan-adoring husband and wife team, caters for holidayers just like us.  Located in the spa at Aguas de Ibiza, the heath and fitness duo offer solutions from those wanting a full detox and sizable weight loss to those who simply fancy a family circuits session….

Kelly and James haven’t always been addicted to the healthy lifestyle.  They explained to me that with BIG corporate jobs in London they were visiting the island and, on one particular trip, they spotted a gym space for sale.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Anyway, during my 5 day stay at Aguas, 38 Degrees North wooed me.  Divine juices were sent to my room.  An invitation to meet James on the beach pre-breakfast popped into my in-box (oh and do bring the family along too, he added).  And – as soon as I clapped my eyes on the underwater spinning bikes – Victor the happy-house-dancing instructor was sent for so that I could ‘experience a class’.

The spa is ENORMOUS under the whiter than white hotel.  With a huge variety of hot and cold environments, underwater massage beds and even a feng shui’d pool with light therapy.

38 Degrees North offers bespoke packages (to fit your personal goals) and, quite frankly, I am already looking for some girlfriends to join me in a 3 or 4 day fitness retreat.  Don’t get me wrong, I’d always use the opportunity (wisely) to party at night but each morning I’d start over again with a juice, a workout, a massage and a good gossip with Kelly who seems like an awful lot of fun.

38 Degrees North (enq  +34 971 338093)  runs Flexible Fitness Breaks which include one personal training session per day, access to their group classes and the luxury spa at Aguas de Ibiza. For the personal training session you can choose from a selection of activities including yoga, pilates, coastal hike or run, beach circuits, yoga, meditation plus more.  Also included is one excursion during the break – you can choose from Stand Up Paddle Boarding (you do yoga on the board), Mountain biking or a scenic hike. You can also access the group classes, a choice of 3-5 activities per day including Yoga, Pilates, Circuits, Aqua Spinning and Dance. The Aguas De Ibiza Spa has a sauna, hamman, steam room, three pools with hydromassage jets, jacuzzis and an exercise pool.

The price of 800 euros also includes 3 nights accommodation (sharing a double deluxe room) at Aguas de Ibiza Eco Luxury Hotel
