Anya Hindmarch’s Be a Bag concept

For at least 10 years the personalised gift market has been exploding.

It all started with named stockings and monogrammed dressing gowns and there are now thriving gift companies who will, quite literally, put your name (or the recipient’s) on just about anything.  A door mat was one which caught my eye the other day.  Mr NO taste lives here – type of thing.

But some designers do the ‘it’s mine’ mark really well.  When I turned 30 (shockingly more than a decade ago) some lovely work chums organized a brilliant present for me. Anya Hindmarch had just launched her ‘Be a Bag’ concept where you could send in a photo for her team to superimpose onto one of her divine bags.  I am sure this heightened the upper-end of the personalised craze no end.  Anyway, I carried around a gorgeous tote with a 1970s photo of little brother and I (then) aged 4 and 5.

And there is no better introduction now to Emma Lomax.  She is, in my opinion, the new Anya Hindmarch of personalisation.  Emma founded Sew Lomax just over a year ago and already Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and many others are begging for exclusive designs for their stores.  Her range of gorgeously girly embroidered bags* can all have short messages (£5 per word) or initials added to them.  This morning I headed straight to her home in West Kensington to find out more about this 26 year old assistant teacher turned needlepoint artist.

Did you learn Domestic Science at school?  I didn’t unfortunately.  As I wasn’t academic, I think I would have benefited greatly by having a creative outlet.

Who inspires you? Mother is my biggest inspiration. She was an embroidery teacher herself years ago and so I was brought up with a needle and thread in my hand.

How long does it take you to thread up a sewing machine? I am not sure I have never timed myself, but it always say it takes me a lot longer than I would like it to.

What was the last item you made?  I am currently stitching rollers to make a bag for hair bits and pieces.

Do you dream in colour?  I dream a lot about my designs. When you are stitching a  design for a week or so the shape/object becomes transfixed in your mind.

Which is your favourite film EVER?  ‘Little Women’ for sure

Where would we find you taking some time out?  Probably on my sofa at home in front of a roaring fire with my dog on my lap and with a nice big cup of tea.

What irritates you?  When you just cant get a design to work and you cant figure out what is going wrong.

Who would you love to make a bag for?  I would love to make a bag for Anya Hindmarch, I know she probably has plenty but I would feel honored to just do so.

What are you most proud of?I am currently doing some work with Fortnum & Mason beauty department which will be potentially be in store next month, which I am beyond excited about.

Which is your favourite London restaurant? I love a fairly new restaurant that has just opened up in Fulham called HONKY TONK with amazing ribs and cocktails.

Where do you dream of being stocked?  I would love to go to America next – maybe Bloomingdales.

Have you always lived in West London? Yes I have. I first lived in Hammersmith and then never really moved far from there.

Tell us a sewing secret.  Don’t be afraid to mix types of stitches – it can create a really interesting texture.

a caffeine hit at Workshop Coffee Co.

I’m in 2 minds.  And it’s not often I am.  So it is unnerving me a little.  You see, I was invited to go along to Workshop Coffee (27 Clerkenwell Rd) by their PR agency.  The PR girl wanted me to review how they make their coffee, soak up the atmosphere and, after indulging in their treats, write it up as a review for you, my lovely reader.

And I did.  In fact, I even braved the snow and held back on my morning caffeine so that I could fall in love, all over again, with the perfectionist Antipodean coffee culture, this time at the Workshop Coffee Co.

When I got there, the manager didn’t know that I was coming.  The PR had clearly forgotten to tell him.  But – I’m a grown up and seeing as I was accompanied by an equally hungry/thirsty grown up – we coped just fine.  Scrolling through my iPhone with freezing fingers and a rumbling tummy, I called the PR only to understand that she was cancelling.  Now.  And then her boss got a little shouty on the phone.  ‘The coffees will be free,’ she screeched ‘but nothing more’.

And my point here (finally) is that Workshop Coffee is unbelievably brilliant.  My pot of Rwanda Buf Caf (£4)was exquisitely sweet and citrus-y, LL’s cappuccino (£2.80) was one of the best she’s ever had and the homemade jam with sourdough toast was faultless.  BUT, do I simply relay this or do I delve into just how miserable the PRs were?

Shouting or no shouting, invited or not – just starve yourself before you take a trip to Workshop Coffee.  It’s a real treat. Oh and next time I’ll go incognito.

Sir Stuart Rose: my knight in shining armour?

Ocado men ensure my family eat

Ocado men ensure my family eat

There’s a running joke in our family.  If the Ocado man doesn’t deliver, we will starve to death.  Except that it’s not a joke AT ALL.  I’ve tried to be a mooch-around-the-supermarket type of girl and… well, it just isn’t happening.  The bottom line is that there is too much else I’d rather be doing.

Sister-in- law’s malteser cake

So, understandably, I’ve been a little nervous of my men (in Ocado uniform) leaving me in the lurch.  Certain items are running low (or out) and chit-chat around the top of the range Aga is that times are tough for the food delivery team.  Sister-in-law is fed up of finding no clickable nappies when she logs on and even suggested we moved across to another online grocer.  ‘God forbid’ was all I could utter as I enjoyed her malteser cake (ingredients delivered by you know who).

In steps our knight in shining armour:  Sir Stuart Rose.

He of ex-bras and knickers retaildom (he left M&S in late 2010 after a 6 year stint) will now be responsible for my groceries.  And, aged 63, he is indeed no spring chicken.   But any retail analyst (of which I am not despite my shopping habits) would agree that his experience is rich and his strategy will be strong.

And let’s hope so.  Otherwise you’ll find a bunch of skeletons at this end.

Tutti Fruiti Beauties

Five a day, five a day…. yawn, yawn, yawn.  We all get it.  The health benefits of eating your weight of fresh fruit and vegetables is nothing new.

But what few of us really appreciate is that those same fruits (and nuts for the sake of this post) can also produce fabulously natural beauty products.  Full of antioxidants and valuable vitamins and minerals (and of course combined with other necessary ingredients), these products make the BEST masques, creams, hair oils and lip salves.

And – just to prove my point, here are my fav fruity beauties:

EOS raspberry & pomegranate lip salve.

EOS raspberry & pomegranate lip balm.

If my lips are happy, I am happy.  This ball of EOS is deliciously flavoured while also packed with antioxidant-filled pomegranate and raspberry extracts.  It’s also a great talking point.  £4.95 from Big Green Smile.

Repose by Temple Spa is an aromatherapy, rich moisturiser which – quite literally – promises you THE BEST night sleep you’ve had for months.  Apply, lie down and breathe.  £37.00 from Temple Spa.

Repose body cream

Repose with bitter orange to ensure you awake revitalised

AHAVA’s Extreme Radiance Lifting Mask is packed with minerals and botanicals from the Dead Sea, berries from the mountains of the Himalayas and – curiously – some fabulous dates.  £32 from AHAVA.co.uk

Aromatherapy Associates face oil

It was the African plums in this (Aromatherapy Associates) mighty Fine Line Face Oil which caught my attention.  As with all AA products, this one is pure, rich and highly effective.  £43.50 from Space NK.

Exfoliants don’t need to be abrasive.  Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel uses the natural fruit enzyme papain, extracted from crushed papaya, to gently dissolve superficial dead skin cells.  £29.50 from Time to Spa.

And last but certainly not least is the NUTTIEST beauty secret of all.  There are so many oils in RODIN by RECINE Luxury Hair Oil I can’t possibly list them all.  But I can promise that they leave your hair massively moisturised, shiny, healthy and smelling oh-so-sweet.  I do admit though that is is not cheap at £60 from Beauty Works West.
