bargaining power

Should we negotiate and bargain to get what we really want?  Clearly a house purchase, a new salary/job and an antique clock would expect some negotiation.  But should we also bargain with our loved ones over which film we watch, where a sofa should go or ‘time off’ to exercise/watch sport/paint nails?  And our kids, they operate wholly on negotiation in order to get homework or piano practice done.  I felt fully relieved (as queen of all negotiation in this house) to read that child experts (whoever they are) actually encourage negotiation.  ”The negotiation between parents and kids can actually be a great learning experience for your kids,” says one author. She explains that if you don’t negotiate, your children may not learn how to deal with conflicts constructively. So, RT this blog and I will promise to make a chocolate cake tomorrow!

plenty of punch

I’ve just been for my weekly box.  it’s such a treat to literally swing at my amazing trainer (and friend) Richard Brennan but how interesting to find myself less keen when the tables are turned.  it turns out I have progressed to the more defensive moves – ie where Richard can attach me with those funny black webbed pads.  Less than keen on the direct assault, this part of my session was halted.  so – to sum up:  I love to punch but don’t turn on me.

childhood versus ambition

a debate I often encounter, probably based around the postcode I live in.  shouldn’t a child be encouraged to work hard whilst ensuring that enjoyment and the sense of achievement are present?  I find overambitious parents a worrying breed.  surely they can see the damage they are doing as they insist that 3 instruments, tap dancing, tennis coaching, swimming squad and japanese method maths are an acceptable routine for a six-year-old?  Even if the child goes on to attend Havard, surely they will be incapable of old-fashioned relaxing and reading for enjoyment?  Long live Lego and the imaginary world of Playmobil.  we all need to unwind a little.

jeans and genes

I found it amusing when the Daily Mail photographer turned up to snap me for Thursday paper (where i tell all not bare all!) for the BRCA gene story.  I was wearing my paige skinnies with a diane von f white shirt when he instructed:  no jeans for Daily Mail shots!

I wonder why the Daily Mail feel it is so important for their profile pics not to include any denim?  The whole world wears jeans – even my grandma aged 95 had a pair of jeans.  The Daily Mail is meant to be aimed at those who wear jeans, isnt it?

final point on this subject (so as not to bore) – it reminded me of the very worthy www.jeansforgenesday.co.uk   which takes place on 7th October.  Donna Ida is pushing it big time and I am a huge fan of her boutiques.   Just don’t arrange a Daily Mail photoshoot on that day.
