Pinky’s jackets

I was introduced to Pinky Laing a few years ago when networking dinner parties were my thing. As queen of all parties, Pinky was going to help me make the dinners even better.  However, over a breakfast meeting, we agreed that the dinner parties could wait as, between us, we had half a dozen better ideas to launch.

So it was no surprise to me to hear that Pinky’s latest venture, her bespoke drummer boy jackets, is a massive success.

I dropped by Pinky’s flat in Westbourne Grove to catch up on life:

Where does your love of military jackets come from?

My father was in the army and I was always crazy about his uniform. On top of this, in my 20s, I would customise every piece of clothing I had. I suppose I just loved looking a little different.

So are these second-hand army jackets?

Initially I was sourcing vintage jackets and embellishing them for clients, but since then, I have found the most incredible pattern cutter. With my design and direction, I have created a jacket which looks military, but is super-flattering at the same time. With elements of a hunting jacket, my female version gives you a nipped-in waist and covers a multitude of sins! The jackets seem to suit men and women of all shapes and sizes!

Who would be your dream stockist?

I think my jackets would look stunning in Matches (Ledbury Road), but I am also a huge fan of the Village Bicycle so would be delighted to see them in there too!

So you make these jackets for men too?

Yes, the men’s jackets are really popular; my boyfriend looks fabulous in his navy blue one. I am also currently working on a range for children.

What else is in the pipeline?

My cigarette trousers just launched and are a big hit with some of my customers. They have a military stripe down each leg and a naughty zip which starts at the front waistband and ends in the small of your back!

Have you always lived in Westbourne Grove?

No. I am a newbie to Westbourne Grove as my stomping ground has always been Chelsea and South Kensington.

What do you adore and hate about west London?

I love walking down Portobello Road for inspiration, an early morning run in Hyde Park with my dogs and a night out at Notting Hill Arts Club. I hate the bendy buses and the litter in equal measure.

Finally, we are dying to know who wears your jackets?

Mimi Spencer, David Frampton, the girls at Tatler, Prince Harry’s cousin and Kinvara Balfour is mid-way through designing hers at the moment.

the new botox

It seems that as I’m neither adverse to the ‘wise-lines’ nor tempted by age-reducing surgery, I am now in the minority.  And so, as you can imagine, I didn’t need to look far for a candidate to test a month’s supply of Pure Gold Collagen sent to me for review.  In fact, I found the perfect tester.  She is a huge fan of … well, anything which might make her look younger than her years.  Almost feverishly, she inspected the 50ml vials of this ‘collagen shot’ whilst agreeing to consume a bottle before her breakfast each morning.

The idea of drinking collagen may seem strange to us Brits but the Japanese women have been a fan of this beauty trick for a while. Pure Gold Collagen combines hydrolysed  collagen with hyaluronic acid to deep moisturize the skin and plump the dermis.

My desperately-seeking-youth friend got on well.  The taste was not as bad as I had feared (like a very sweet fruit juice) and before long, the remarks came flooding in.  Had she had more botox?  Had she had her lips filled?  Contemporaries became more and more curious.

By the end of the month, her skin glowed and any fine lines her botox lady had missed were now filled.  With her hair and nails obviously benefiting too, she was quite literally before our eyes looking more youthful by the day.

Pure Gold Collagen can be bought at www.boots.com at £35.99 for a box of 10.

Losing my legs and finding my nose

Me in The Balancer

I was dubious when I set off for the Age Management Clinic on Harley Street.  Promising an awful lot, this week saw the launch of yet another expensive way to anti-age, lymph-drain and slim us down.  I bring you, from Henley-on-Thames, The Ballancer.

With sophisticated pump units connected to what looks like a big blue sleeping bag, I slipped off my trousers and jumped in.  Feeling a comfortable amount of pressure up and down my legs and stomach, I tried to relax.  The Balancer claims to be equivalent to 24 pairs of massage hands so I pictured beaches in Thailand and spas in Bali.   Until Anita, my therapist, turned up the pressure.  And there I was, back in the room again.

One session costs £50 and, to be honest, I did not feel particularly ‘body light’ nor ‘energised’.  However, the compression therapy had soothed my sore running legs and I’m sure my lymphatic flow had been enhanced, honestly….

With a pit stop at The Natural Kitchen, to catch up with the busy jeweller (never a bad choice of friend), I promised myself a quick visit to the slightly alternative fragrance boutique, Le Labo on Devonshire Street, W1.  In a perfume world where thousands (or at least it feels that many) of fragances are launched each year, I find smell shopping almost impossible.  Very few seem to appeal to me while friends seem to change their chosen whiff with the wind.  So, I was curious to see if the novelty Le Labo offers would seduce me.

Le Labo boutique, London

The concept of Le Labo, a reaction to mass-produced commercial perfume, launched five years ago and now has boutiques in NYC, LA and Tokyo.  Perfumer Fabrice Penot left Giorgio Armani dissatisfied by the marketing demands on his creativity and teamed up with Eddie Roschi to create a lab where fragrances are blended by hand on site, rather than in a factory.

Novelty value and stunning shop interior aside, the smells set out to ‘shock’ and that they do. I’d step aside rather than sit next to someone wearing anything so strong and emphatic.

El Labo, 28A Devonshire Street, W1 or online.
